William J. McMahon Award
The William J. McMahon Award was established at the request of the McMahon family to memorialize Dr. William J. McMahon, co-founder and long time Director of the Porter Cup Golf Tournament.
The award seeks to perpetuate Dr. McMahon’s commitment to the Porter Cup and Amateur Golf, to make a positive contribution to the stature of Mid-Amateur Golf and to acknowledge the key role Mid-Amateurs maintain in Amateur Golf.
The Committee has endowed the fund with sufficient money to continually provide an award to the Qualifying Medalist of the United States Mid-Amateur Championship. The award, to be presented at the Tournament Player’s Dinner annually, consists of a suitably engraved trophy, as well as a contribution to the charity of the winner’s choice. The winner will also be offered an exemption into the following year’s Porter Cup.
Congratulations to Richard “Skip” Berkmeyer, Jr. (right) of St. Louis, MO who is the 2009 William McMahon Award recipient.
Thomas Denn, Treasurer, recognizes the many Porter Cup players including Ralph Bogart, Ben Crenshaw, Nathaniel Crosby, Vinny Giles, Downing Gray, Bill Harvey, Rick LaRose, Buddy Marucci, Steve Melnyk, Jay Sigel, Fred Silver, Barry VanGerbig, Scott Verplank, and Danny Yates who serve on the Advisory Committee of the Fund and are among the primary contributors.
