|Q&A with NCAA Champ John Peterson
July 5, 2011
John Peterson of Fort Worth, Texas was crowned the 2011 NCAA Individual Champion as the Men's Division I Golf Championships were held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma early last month.
While at LSU, Peterson was named a three-time All-American, a two-time All-SEC performer and was on the Ben Hogan Watch List twice.
In February 2011, he won the prestigious Jones Cup, a preview of those hoping to make the Walker Cup Team.
As he prepares to play in the Porter Cup, Peterson took some time to answer some questions:
Why did you pick LSU?
I picked LSU because I really liked the golf coach. He was my swing instructor, actually my first swing instructor ever when I was 11 years old and so I just kind of went back to him.
What was your favorite part about college golf and why?
My favorite part about college golf was pulling through for your teammates and having four other guys that depend on you to play well. It’s not just about an individual thing. It’s team golf and it’s something you don’t get to play much except for those four years.
How would you describe the feeling of winning the 2011 NCAA Individual Championship to someone?
Absolutely unreal. How about that for an answer!
How is your golf game right now?
Pretty good, but I mean, it could always be better. I can work on chipping it better, and just getting it closer.
What are your plans for the rest of 2011 and beyond?
This year I am staying amateur until hopefully the Walker Cup. And then after that, I will turn pro right before Q-school and hopefully get through that the first time. And then we'll see where that takes me in my next step in life.
Other than golf, what are your favorite sports to watch or play?
I love to snow-ski and water-ski. I love to hunt and fish. And I love to play baseball, but definitely hunting and fishing are my favorite sports.
